hey everyone i need some advice about a month and half ago, i had my husband arrested for domestic violence.... since then i have gone to court and even put a permanet restraining order against him.... the day he was arrested i told them that he slapped me but it wasn't true.... the reason i had called the cops was because he was threatening me and he had slapped me the week before that... i felt so emtionally destressed.... i have to go back to court next month, what should i do? should i tell the judge the truth that he didn't slap me on the day i said he did.... do u think the judge will understand me on why i did it.... or do u think i shouldn't do that..... after everything that happened me and my husband reunited... and now i feel stuck in this stituation.... do u think i can do jail time for telling the truth?

SEEK HELP at a local domestic violence shelter or center. They have trained psychologists and legal experts to help you. You were in imminent fear of physical harm when you filed your report and it takes tremendous courage to get the police involved, as that oftentimes puts you at greatest risk. The people at the centers know and understand about what TRULY goes on in a battering relationship, and can educate the judge even if you made a misstatement originally to the police.

First off, if you tell the judge the truth you're looking at possible jail time, and for what? OK, so he didn't smack you around on the exact day at the exact time you said he did, but he has been slapping you around, right? Isn't it possible that in your state of emotional distress, which is a direct result of the abuse you have suffered at the hands of your husband, that you got confused about the date your husband slapped you? DO NOT change your story. Stand up for yourself. Your husband has no right to treat you that way, and he needs to learn what happens to men who smack their wives around.

Secondly, if you are now back together with your husband then you have made a HUGE mistake. Get it through your head now -- he's not going to stop smacking you around or threatening you, and it's only going to get worse from here. What is it going to take before you realize your life is in danger? A broken arm? A trip to the Emergency Room? Getting beaten so badly that you can't even cry because it hurts too much? If you haven't done so already, get him out of your life. If you have to leave and have no place to stay, go to the nearest shelter for battered women. Whatever you do, DON'T GO BACK TO HIM. At best you can expect to get the crap beaten out of you for the next 20 years or more. At the worst you can expect him to kill you, and he will. Be strong. Get out and get help.

It's a risk, but I doubt the judge will throw you in jail
for giving false information. In any case, never,
EVER, lie to a judge in court. If the judge even suspects
that you might be lying to him, then you will be in BIG
trouble! :(

This is what happens when you lie. You are stuck with the lie now. If you change your story, your husband will go free and no judge will believe you again. If you reunited with the man who abused you, you deserve whatever happens to you. Abusers don't change. They just get worse.

I suspect that you want to change the story because you two love birds are back together.
