Sometimes people dont find out that they are pregnant until there bacically in their 6-8 weeks. If they havent been taking pre-natal vitamins but start when they find out, they are still able to have a healthy baby. So my question is why would it make a difference if you start taking them then then starting when you find out a lest say 4-5 weeks?

I didn't go to the Dr. until I was 3 months pregnant and my child was healthy but I think that it is important to go as early as possible. I just think that sometimes, it's just your luck of the draw when it comes to your children. I did smoke some but never drank alcohol but my sister is a non-smoker and carried her daughter full term (my son was 3-4 weeks early but not premature) and she is 3 1/2 years old and cannot carry a conversation with people yet. She looks at me and says Jeremy (which is my son's name) and I've tried to tell her "Kaye" which is not hard to say. She says some words but babbles most of the time even though she has been to a speech therapist for a year now. Genetics have alot to do with things I believe.

The sooner you start the vitamins the more nutrients go to your baby. A woman can have a healthy baby without the prenatals, many women get sick when taking them. But they are a great source of many important vitamins your body and baby need that may be lacking in your diet.

Agreed....vitamins aren't just for your baby, they restore YOUR nutrients as well. Baby will get what he needs, even if you lose muscle tone and teeth (an old wives tale was that a woman would lose a tooth for every pregnancy, because of malnutrition)

Eat well, and that will help. Vitamins can't possibly provide every thing your body needs. If they make you sick, try some without iron, or even children's chewables, my mom worked in OB and they would give the sick mommies Flintstones. Also keep in mind that Total cereal has 100% of your daily vitamins, so a bowl of that keeps you good!

Taking pre-natal vitamins can be a good idea throughout the pregnancy, but not all vitamins are created equally! Go for organic vegetarian vitamins and you and your baby will both be healthier!

Because you need the extra vitamins more for yourself after the pregnancy has been established because the baby will suck nutrients out of your stores and leave you with nothing. Even pregnant women do not always get all the vitamins they need from food alone.
