I might be able to tell you early next week! I've just bought some Glo-White powder detergent stuff to try on hubby's shirts and son's school shirts and basically anything that used to be white but now looks a bit greyish.

An alternative is dumping them in a bowl of diluted bleach but I'm gonna try the above, more sensitive to skin route first!

In your grocery store or drug store you should be able to find a product called "bluing" or "blueing". It adds a bit of blue back into the cloth, to get a truly bright white again. Be careful with all the recommendations for bleach, it does break down the cloth if you use to much. To prevent this from happening again, use light starch. The soil and stains wash away every laundry day! The soil adheres to the starch not the cloth itself, so with every load of laundry you wash away the stain, and simply add more starch to protect your shirts again..

Go to the detergent section of a supermarket and buy a box of lingerie whitener. Soak the shirts in that for the recommended time and wash as normal in the machine. Really works well.

The least expensive thing is to wash in bleach and maybe add a cup of baking soda to boost the bleach. You can also buy borax on the laundry detergent aisle - but bleach works fine. It may take a few washings or you may need to soak. Be careful because too much bleach will weaken the fabric. Also it can stain (permanently!) other clothes if any residue is left in your washing machine. Merry Christmas!!

I saw some special powder for sale in the Supermarket the other day expecially for white shirts - try this and see if it works. Sorry i can't remember the name of it, but it's in with all the other washing powders.

fill a bowl /sink with hot water and about 4 squirts of bleach ...put the shirts in and make sure there all covered in the water ...leave for an hour then check to see how white they are if there still a bit grey then leave them a little longer when your happy with the colour put then on a light wash in the washing machine and you will have lovely white shirts ....good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give them a good hot wash in your machine (60deg) - not the delicate wash but the one for cottons. As well as your usual washing powder or liquid add some Oxi or Oxi fix which is a fabric stain remover. Soon have them looking whiter.

Leave them in a bucket of water with a capful of bleach for a few hours then wash - don't use too much bleach or leave them any longer or it will start do damage the material. Some types of bleach ie domestos actually have instructions for bleaching whites.
