Depending on the incoming water pressure, if you have a expansion tank on the system, water mineral content and if you drain your heater twice a year. But you want a general answer, This would be approx 10 years, note that some manufactures do have a 12 year warranty but remember this like all things you really do get what you pay for and in a water heater you may want to spend a little extra, but before you buy new make sure it is a tank leak and not a t&p valve or connection leak or maybe a leak from the element gasket.

The life of a water heater can vary. The average is 6 years but some water heaters offer extended life kits of about 4 years, bringing the total to 10. Usually what determines the how long it last is the anode rod. (This is something that goes into the top of the heater and dissolves with time.) What also needs to be factored in is how big the heater is and how often/much hot water is used. Your altitude can also make a difference, they make water heaters for high altitude homes. Some suggest that you should drain them every once in a while but this is something that is unneeded and in fact can cause damage/problems if you don't know what you are doing. I suggest going researching the water heater you currently have. Manufacturers usually have trouble shooting guides that you can look up by model number to help determine if you have a problem. If you have a problem and your water heater is about 7-8 years old it might be cheaper to replace because like anything else sometimes when you fix one thing something else goes wrong.

Some have a warranty of 6 years if they are cheaper brands.
IF you drain it once and year and take care of it it could last 10.
If you have any leaks, replace it.

It can stop operating the day it's installed. Tank leak is a different matter. Just remember it's made by man not God.

I've always heard 20 years is good for them. I think you can get more if you drain them once in awhile. Some new ones are self cleaning.
