If you really want to save money and you have a "normal" heating system in addition to the fireplace, don't use the fireplace.

The heat lost up the chimney if far far greater than the heat you get from using the fireplace. A fireplace with a partially closed damper will let sufficient air go up the chimney to change all the air in you house 5 times every hour. Just think what a burning fire does!!

If you do this, you don't have to worry about cleaning the chimney.

Chimney Damper Lowes

I cleaned it without any of that stuff. The only reason you got creosote build ing up is because you are not making a hot fire. You have a slow burning, smoking fire. In the olden days when they heated homes with wood. They made a rip roaring fire to heat the place up quickly. No creosote forms because it itself is being burned before it escapes the chimney. Start a fire with paper and then add thin strips of wood that has been oiled 20 years ago.with a oil wood stain. It burns like super fast. As I was doing a renovation, I had to get rid of the old paneling. So in the winter in a cabin, this was my only source of heat and I had a lot of fast burning wood. Totally cleared out the chimney. I have seen brick chimneys that actually glowed in the evening they were that hot. Creosote is a non existent thing.

Dear Cheap....it really isn't difficult...but it is a pretty messy job. You can get a length of heavy chain that is roughly the same length as your chimney and use this to knock out most of the buildup. It may not do as well as the brushes that professional sweeps use, but it should get rid of the large amounts of buildup that cause the most danger of chimney fires.

It is very easy just take a long chain and drop one end of it down the chimney and hold the other end and start swinging the chain in circles. The chain will knock down the blockage. It is the easiest way and you don't have to worry about getting someone else to do it.

There are some creosote cleaning logs you can burn that will help, but a good cleaning is safer. You could have a flue fire if you don't clean it correctly. Some homeowners insurers won't cover a flue fire if you can't prove you didn't have it cleaned professionally and inspected every year.
