each time scratch one value from each side:
scratch out 4 and 28, then 8 and 23, then 8 and 23, then 8 and 19, then 8 and 18. The only one left is 18; this is the median.

Order them by value, then find the middle number (i.e. median):
You already ordered them, so here we have 11 numbers altogether.
Then, find the one in the very middle: here, it is the 6th number, which would be 18, and this is your answer.
If you had 10 or 12 numbers, you would take both of them, calculate their sum, then divide by 2, and the result would be the median.
