just remember that YOUR the parent. doctors are there to monitor progress, and treat "problems". call your doctor and ask WHY!
i would never give anything (even a vitamin) to my child without a valid reason! your doctor should have told you! how irresponsible of him, I'd call him on it.

and if your breast feeding you should STILL be on your prenatal vitamins.

Because even with breast milk babies don't always get all the vitamins that they need. Adults, even breastfeeding moms never get all the nutrients that they need daily (This is why so many people get sick), and this is just added protection for your baby. Make sure that you are also taking your prenatal vitamins...these are recommended while breastfeeding. No, the multi vitamins are not as good for you as the prenatals.

Yes, that's what my pediatrician's always told me with my breastfed babies, I believe its still the standard of care, in fact I have seen a lot of articles saying with parents more concerned about sun damage kids and people in general tend to be lacking vitamin d. However, you don't need a multi, just Vitamin D drops, you can find those at Target or Babies r Us, thats what I got for baby #2.

Many doctors believe the hype from formula companies that breastmilk is deficient in some way, usually vitamin D. Vitamin D isn't a vitamin at all but is a steroid that is MEANT to be produced by the skin in exposure to the sun.

There are many reasons why these vitamin drops are a bad idea. Your babies digestive tract is meant for breastmilk ONLY. In addition the vitamins can easily be aspirated.

Honestly I think you need a new doctor. One that understands breastfeeding and doesn't write a prescription without telling you why. One that you feel comfortable asking questions. And synthetic vitamins are very poorly processed by anyone, particularly infants though and can, in fact, interfere with the absorption of vitamin from natural sources (like breastmilk). Breastmilk is low in vitamin D and iron ONLY when compared to formula. If you compare blood samples formula fed infants are more likely to be deficient. Babies who receive breastmilk and are "topped up" with formula are even more at risk than babies fed just one or the other because artificial vitamins interfere with the absorption of vitamins from breastmilk.

Recent studies have shown that babies exclusively breastfed for 7 months or LONGER have no anaemia. Even though many doctors keep insisting you must start iron fortified cereal at X age to prevent anemia.

Breastmilk is the perfect food, provided mom is not malnourished.

Your doctor should have told you why. It is advisable for breastfeeding women to take multi-vitamins, but I think that you should get another appointment with your doctor to find out why he prescribed it for your son, or you could phone the doc's office and ask to talk to him to save you from having to go in.

EDIT:
Since do all children get put on multivitamins? My daughter never was given anything like this, not even when she was being exclusively breastfed.
It's not something done randomly- there has to be a reason, and all parents with children taking these believing that it is normal, or standard procedure, need to go back to their doctors and ask why they are taking them.

I think all kids are put on multi vitamins. My son is 8 and his doctor still wants him to take them. He's a happy and healthy boy. I've had five kids and they all were put on multi vitamins. It gives them that extra help they need. There's no reason to worry.

my doctor always precribed baby vitamins to my children (i had four) and i gave them to them until they were old enough to take chewable vitamins. its just a way of keeping enough vitamins and minerals in there system so they grow healthy and strong. i think it is most important when they are older and going through the " i dont like this" stage. then you know you have to worry about the vitamins and minerals they may not be getting. but myself i just gave them to my children as soon as the dr. told me to start. good luck and merry christmas!

When our son was small I breastfed Trav & my Dr. presrcibed multi-vitamins . Why can't you ask your doctor or call the office or email them? When you go in next visit - have a list of written questions - sometimes you forget to ask the questions you had in mind, good luck.

I think all Pediatricians put babies on a vitamin supplement, for the same reason adults should take vitamin supplements. It just ensures our bodies of getting enough of the vitamins we need despite of our daily diet. Both of my girls were on vitamins.
