I think more significant than the auto industry, is that fact that Detroit is the birthplace of mechanized, assembly line manufacturing.
Henry Ford's assembly line manufacturing model impacted a broad range of industries around the world.

The city of Detroit has an equal impact on the world-- and the United States-- as any other city. Frankly I feel it's amazing, but that's a personal view.
