Suppose we start with the simple assumption that space and time are infinite.

Given some unlikely event- say that the proverbial roomful of monkeys banging away at a typewriter have a slim chance of typing out Romeo and Juliet…still with all of that infinite space and time in which to bang, it could happen. In fact, it does happen.

Slim chances are still chances.

Given all the time and space in the universe, a million to one shot will eventually shoot.

This is the basis for multiple dimensions. There are, in fact, 4 different flavors of multiple dimensions.

Flavor one: Scientists have theorized that somewhere, in this physical universe, out there is an earth just like this one, surrounded by eight planets, just like this one, and that on it is a you, just like this one. But that you may at this moment be turning off the radio and opting to do something else, while you, curious creature that you are, await the end of this story.

The reason you don’t see this parallel universe, is that it’s tremendously far away. There are millions of permutations, each far far away. So the chances of you running into your doppelganger is nil. (But then again, what did we say about chances?)

That’s flavor 1 – infinite space, parallel universes all in one.

Flavor 2 – has infinite space and infinitely varied time, and perhaps changeable physics. This theory says, okay, Bang! The universe begins to expand. But like eddys in water, there might be hot and cold spots. If the universe all expanded uniformly, time/space has a shot at uniformity too…but with this notion of eddys- actually “postinflation bubbles’, time would behave differently. (Remember discussions about the speed of light and relative time- well there you go!) In these bubbles, the initial conditions of the parallel universes, the very primordial soups, would be different. So not only do we have parallel universes, we have totally different pockets of alien physics. Maybe your doppelganger breathes methane and eats acid, has tentacles and does a mean eight-legged tango.

Flavor 3 – I do so want to explain this clearly to you, but I cannot because it assumes an understanding of quantum physics which I’ve been trying to wrap my head around now for 20 years. Shroedinger’s cat? The notion that thing are happening infinitely in the here and now, but that existence is based upon what you’ve observed, but that it does not necessarily connote the only reality – ow. It just hurts. It makes my head hurt. So that said- flavor 3, multidimensions, right here. Same spatial plane somewhere you can’t see. There. Listen to Adam Frank- he’ll explain it better.

Flavor 4 is entirely theoretical. We live in a world of 4 dimensions- the three dimensions of x, y, and z to locate position, and the fourth dimension of time. That can be represented mathematically. Some scientists posit that any mathematical formula represents some reality. Infinite variations on formulas suggest multiple dimensions beyond our puny 4 dimensional imaginings.

So there are Multiple dimensions.--lots of them.

there are three spatial dimensions we know about. They deal with latitude, longitude, and altitude. However there are some who suspect that time is actually the 4th dimension. This is still only a theory. This is a commonly accepted theory though. Then come the more complex theories. Such as the Kaluza-Klein theory which proposes 5 dimensions, or string and M-theory, and there use of calabi-Yau spaces which propose up to ten, eleven, or even 26 dimensions. Then you have hilbert spaces and there possiblity to have infinitely many dimensions.
So yes i definitely think there are dimensions out there that we have guessed about but do not completely know about.

Just for the record, by that which my people swear by, I didn't make any of this up.
There is no single answer to that question on which all scientists agree. When we were dealing solely in macroversal terms, that is events we can see and measure with standard instruments like a yardstick, four dimensions were sufficient, length, width, breadth, and duration. Time is not a dimension, that's a misconception, time is the tool we use to measure duration, just as we use inches or meters to measure length. When particle physics and quantum mechanics, not to mention Special and General Relativity, became accepted, it was discovered those were inadequate to explain the Universe as we were beginning to understand it. One theory is that there are the four we started with, plus 6 dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds located at every point in 3 dimensional space. Another is that the universe we can physically interact with is only a 3 dimensional brane suspended in a 4 dimensional bulk. So we have either 7 or 10, depending on which authority you ask. A third theory is that there are two four dimensional branes separated by a 2 dimensional space, but at least that still only leaves us with 10. I personally like theory number three, because for all practical purposes we're back in I like to think of as the real world, and only physics guys have it with which to deal.

Human, no. Spiritual, yes. "Reality is multi-dimensional. We are multi-dimensional beings who exist simultaneously in a multi-dimensional reality. Long ago, our bodies evolved from primates. Even longer ago, our minds evolved from the stars. But before the universe began, our spirits existed forever as part of the divine in higher dimensions. At the conscious (physical) level, our bodies are like a miniature replica of the solar system. Our hearts perform the function of the sun - the center of the system. Other organs within our body are also used by our souls to find a means of expression. The planets exert astrological vibrations upon our bodies that influence our personalities and soul patterns. At the subconscious (soul) level, the solar system is our larger body. We are connected to the planets, the stars, spiritual realms and entities. On the superconscious (spirit) level, we are one with the Whole. At this level, we are on a conscious level with all there is - the divine." "Solar systems were created for our souls to have cycles of life experiences for the purpose of spiritual advancement. The universe can be thought of as a gigantic university and each solar system as a college. Each planet is like a particular classroom - a realm - where souls can learn lessons related to that particular realm. The universe is the third dimension in the hierarchy and represents three-dimensional life. Other dimensions in the afterlife hierarchy represent other-dimensional life. Each planet in our solar system is a representation of a different dimension in the hierarchy. The planet Earth represents three-dimensional life. The planet Mercury represents the second dimension. The planet Venus represents the fourth dimension. Cayce referred to the various afterlife dimensions by using the name of the planet associated with it. For example, when Cayce referred to souls sojourning through Venus, he was referring to souls experiencing the afterlife dimension associated astrologically with the planet Venus. He did not mean that people were actually living on the planet Venus."

How can we know anything about dimensions we don't know about???!!!

We know of FOUR actual dimensions. Three of space and one of time.
The existence of others has been postulated, and there is even some tentative proof of them, but nothing conclusive yet -- so we can only currently prove FOUR actual dimensions. You can speculate about others all you want to, that doesn't make them real -- only proof does. :)

There are a bunch of dimensions that have to do with different things. Some have to do with time, some have to do with imaginary things, and some have to do with spirits. I don't know if there's really a set number.

Dimensions? There are 4 of them. Length, width, depth, and time.

the amount of dimensions will depend on your belief in reality, if you believe in parallel universes, they would be endless. This question will be around for ever and might never get answered for sure..
