I am a 21 year old female college student and I was wondering what I would wear to an interview for a waitressing job at an upscale tavern. (By upscale, I mean that it isn't a dive bar. It's an expensive restaurant where 20 somethings that have jobs come to watch the game.) The look they seem to be going for in their watresses is clean-cut, attractive, and energetic. Is a nice pair of jeans, a stylish top (sexy but not too reavealing) and a pair of somewhat dressy shoes (think trendy higheels in a dark brown or black) appropriate? My build is slightly pettite and I have a large bust, a small waist and proportionate hips. I know what to wear for a more serious job interview; but I don't want show up in the classic interview dress pants/skirt and formal shirt ensemble and be dismissed as uptight. Thanks for your suggestions.

What you've suggested is fine, but jeans is not upscale. Sounds like a sports bar and jeans would be fine if it's a casual sports bar. If the 20-somethings come in suits, I'd suggest black dress pants and a white top. Looks more like a cleancut uniform but you can make that dressy too.

If it's a nice place to work, I would not wear jeans. A pair of black pants should be fine. Also, a button down shirt, I think would be better than a sexy top (whether revealing or not). Like "What Not To Wear" stylists say, "You should dress not for the work you have, but for the work you want!" In any case, I think, a job interview is the case where it's better to be dressed a little more business-like than casual. Employers like presentable appearances, especially in a customer service job like that!

I would wear black pants or khakis and either a nice button up shirt or a polo shirt. For any job interview you should dress slightly nicer than you would on your daily job basis.

I wouldn't wear jeans, they might take you as a slacker and I'm not sure if I would wear heels. If you are planning on waitressing, you won't want to wear heels to work. Your feet would be killing you at the end of the day. And the interviewer might take you as impractical. I would wear a nice pair of brown or black casual business shoe (depending on which color goes better with your outfit).

Good Luck!

If this is a more "upscale" place, I suggest not wearing jeans, and if you think a skirt is too dressy,...perhaps wear some dress/black pants and a cute top. No spaghetti straps though.

I think instead of jeans, i would wear black pants with a nice top. jeans come off as too casual sometimes and depending on who's doing the hiring that might be a turn off.

What women should wear for a job interview:
Avoid dresses.
Shoes should have conservative heels.
Use a briefcase rather than a purse.
Conservative nail polish.
Minimal use of make up.
Limit jewellery to one wedding ring and one set of earrings.

wear dress pants with a casual type shirt. if you are going to wear earrings then don't wear earrings that are too big like hoops. wear earrings that are small. you can also wear perfume, but make sure it is not strong. makeup is okay also, but dont wear too much.
