It depends on what kind of peel you're getting and how deep you're wanting to go. Some chemical peels are fairly superficial such as some of the over the counter products. Generally, light or no peeling can be expected. Enzyme peels cause an enzymatic reaction that can digest dead or diseased protein material without harming living healthy cells. Unlike abrasive scrubs or other mechanical methods, proteolytic enzymes are selective and therefore the patient is less likely to cause irritation from pressure or over manipulation. These are generally used for exfoliating rather than resurfacing.

Glycolic peels, lactic or salycilic acid and THC peels can go deeper into the epidermis depending on the % used. In the state where I practice, aestheticians generally use a lighter peel than can be found in a dermatologists office; however, they are much stronger than OTC products.

Yes, you will be red after your application. Depending on the type/strength of your peel you might experience stinging or burning during the procedure and often times, a little motorized fan is there to help "cool" down any discomfort. After the peel is completed you may look sunburned for at least a day with some peels (physician strength) causing scabbing but those are extreme. Your skin should start peeling around the 3rd day - usually starting around the mouth area. Do not pull at this skin! If it's bothering you, take some small sterilized cuticle scissors and cut any dead and hanging skin. Be sure to keep your skin EXTREMELY moisturized after your peel and be SURE to wear sunscreen as your skin may be extra sensitive to sunlight and it's damage.

Above all, choose a professional (aesthetician or physician) who knows what they're doing and will support you in the unlikely event of any problems.

Good luck...

I just had one done about a month ago. I loved it!!! I also just got a micro-dermabrasion done as well. Loved that too.
The chemical peel...I got my face washed and then the girl picked at my face and got all the black heads out. Some hurt...but they were the deep ones. I really didn't realize how many little black heads I had. But anyways...after that, I got my face washed again. Then the girl put this chemical on my face. It tingled a little bit and then a little more. But nothing too bad. After a little while she took it off with wet cotton balls. She then put some cream on my face and that was it. I was done. I was told to use some cleaners and scrubs...check out the link:
www.laroche-posay.us/ I used the face scub and acne wash. It has worked wonders for my skin. I didn't experiance any peeling afterwards.
I just had the micro-dermabraision. Great too!!! Makes your face smooth and a nice glow to it. The peels...depends on what kind you get will depend on if your going to peel or not.

the word 'peel' just makes me cringe. I think they should call it, skin refresher or something. Someone in the marketing department got fired. Anyway. I would probably try and get someone to help you, preferably someone who has done it before, because I could see it going wrong in a number of terrifying and peely ways. Really I'd just pay someone to do it. But that's because I fear the peel.
