Yes, Pistol Pete was a much more dominant player. Just compare their stats in the college years.

Pete was an unbelievable college player. Offensively, no one could touch him. Great ball handler.
And remember - there was no ' 3 point shot ' -- or his stats would have been even greater.

Now - comparing him to MJ is a little tough. Jordan was a better overall athlete - and a better defensive player.
Michael played for NC, which had several other great players.

Pete pretty much carried his team. In fact, the next great one out of LSU was Shaq.

Pistol Pete - no doubt was the very best college player to ever play and his average was closer to 56 points a game if the 3 point line was ever measured and used – Dale Brown LSU Coach confirmed this by watching each game of Pete’s on film…INCREDIBLE! MJ could score and certainly was a great talent but there was never the shooting or ball-handling abilities that Pete had, foul shooting as well. Pete was a legend as he played and his own teammates black-balled him along with his coaches ~ CRAZY to think that other players on his own team would not support him or give him back the ball. He was a cast out player due to extreme jealously and a lot of huge insecure ego's that later on in life admitted his excellence and his outrageous ability to be the best they ever saw or played with or against. Sad to say his NBA career could never blossom and he was relegated to some of the worst teams ever, almost as a whole, the league, the heirarchy and even the coaches tried to plant him on the bench and keep him in limbo.... His numbers were OK considering the whole time he played healthy vs. injured or coming off an injur vs. injured or coming off an injury. He had games that Bill Walton will tell you (and he played in these games) that Pete had to play 1 on 5 at times in order to win. Michael Jordan was a much better defender and jumper with a great wingspan and tenacious defense that helped his teams and made that time with Dean Smith and the coaching of DDDDDDDDefense minded Phil Jackson so important to the rest of his team mates to support him and also give him the ball. Michael took the game over and Pete tried hard to help his team to become better and often they didn’t see his passes coming or were caught watching him instead of setting picks and rolling. His IQ of the game was far beyond almost everyone then and possibly to this day. Had Pete worked on defense and landed on the New York Knicks, Celtics even the Lakers, early on in his career, he easily could have won several championships and maybe even brought the game to new heights that were never reached because of idiots in ownership and coaching positions of the NBA that wanted to stop the greatest phenom ever to play at the time. Had he played in the limelight which was around when MJ, Bird and Magic played under then more publicity and of course a better chance at playing for a contender would have been more likely to have happened. Not only that he would have really made some money! There has been a few very good players that are amazing but no one truly had the command of the ball and shooting touch of Pistol Pete PRO or COLLEGE Too bad he was injured while the medical profession didn't know then what they know now about knees. God Bless Pete Maravichrest in peace, I guess we should pray for forgiveness of all those jerks who were so scared of being embarrassed by such a magician that they did everything they could to stop his career from ever becoming what it deserved to be. MJ got the rings but any real athlete and true lover of the game that played at that level knows better than to say only the rings matter. Yeah right.. in that case Bill Russell and Robert Horry were definitely 2 of the most incredible talents ever. We all know Witl outplayed Russell and Horry absolutely was better than guys like Chris Webber cause of his knack for being able to deliver when it counted but seriously was Pete better than MJ - Yeap - He would kill him in one on one and horse too!

I would have to say pistol Pistol Pete. I mean he did have the green light but either way he had a better statistical career. Im not sure if any of you watched film on Pistol Pete but the guy played like he was from the "hood". I mean dude had crazy game, handles fancy passes including good fundamentals. He was a very special player. I just wonder what the hell the other team was doing while he was puttin up 40 plus a game, thats just unacceptable no matter what era!

Statistically speaking, Maravich's numbers tower over Jordan's. However, in all fairness to Jordan, he was playing for a coach, Dean Smith, who emphasized team play over individual scoring. Maravich played for his father, who apparently placed no restrictions on his style of play. His teams did not win anything, while it is fair to note that Jordan hit the winning shot in the NCAA tourney.

He was certainly a better pure shooter. Jordan is obviously more athletic.

If statistics are any indication, Pistol Pete beats Jordan at the collegiate level hands down.

Pete didn't have Dean Smith holding him back.

As the joke goes...who was the only guy that could hold Jordan to 15 points in college? Dean Smith.

JJ reddick was a better college player tham MJ. Shows you how much being a good college play adds up to being a top pro.
