I like the Harry Potter books very much and would not discourage a child from reading them. I was first introduced to the series while babysitting my pastor's children for the weekend. I read the first book the first night and was done with the second one by the time the weekend was over. I don't look at the books as celebrating some sort of wicked occult lifestyle, I feel that they're more like modern versions of fairy tales. I am interested to see what kinds of answers you get for this question as I have wondered the same thing myself.

There's nothing wrong with them.On the contrary I find Harry Potter's books pretty educational and generally well written.

The books are riveting, and get people reading, nobody should be prohibited from reading them.
