Standalone DVD player/recorders are the easiest way. Just plug your VCR in, and away you go. Combo units that have both VHS and DVD recorder built-in to one box simplify matters even more.

If you wanted to do this via computer, you'd need a video capture card (Like an ATI TV Wonder or Happauge WinTV PVR) and lots of hard disk space. The only advantage of this approach is editing capability- if you just want to transfer entire movies without changing anything, go with a standalone recorder.
