Depends on the genre and age of your target audience but is usually a minimum of 60,000 words for a full length novel aimed at adults.

I have read that an average novel length book is generally between 150,000 and 300,000 words. Dont forget that editors will want to demolish half your manuscript anyway so write more in case. If you are writing a short story, it can be any length between 1,000 and 30,000 words.
I think, however, that you should write however much feels right to you and not panic too much about word count!!

There is no set standard for the length for a manuscript. I have a story that is over 210 written pages (college ruled, 8-1/2x11 in., single spaced, double spaced between paragraphs) and I am still not done.

It varies a lot. 20k is a bit small, more a novelette. Figure on an average page containing around 300 words and work it out.
My shortest novel is about 75000 words and some are as long as 160000.

It's not so much about how many words (unless your publisher dictates that) but about the completion of the story.
