The people elected Robert Byrd. The senators elected Trent Lott. See the difference?
Also, he supports minority rights in office, regardless of his past. In the NAACP's [27] Congressional Report Card for the 108th Congress (spanning the 2003–2004 congressional session), Byrd was awarded with an approval rating of 100% for favoring the NAACP's position in all 33 bills presented to the United States Senate regarding issues of their concern. Only 16 other Senators of the same session matched this approval rating. In June 2005, Byrd [28] proposed an additional $10 million in federal funding for the Martin Luther King memorial in Washington, DC, remarking that "With the passage of time, we have come to learn that his Dream was the American Dream, and few ever expressed it more eloquently."

I'm a Democrat and don't support Byrd. I think his affiliation in the past with the KKK is disgusting and in my mind, he is a racist. He says he repented and has advocated minority rights or whatever that means. However, I don't trust him and think Democrats of his state should throw him out but they don't because he is the "king of pork". He is 89 years old and still in the Senate, he probablly is senile! Only liberals support Byrd but moderate Democrats don't and we're the majority.

Byrd also said in 2005: "I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times . . . and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened."

Because he has a "D" behind his name. This makes him immune from any wrong doing. When I run for office I'm going to run as a Democrat even though I don't agree with any of their policies. But that's the only way I will get a free pass. If I run as a Republican the media would not only try to find dirt on me, they'd make it up.

You would really have to ask WVA people about that.
And it's probably the same reason Rep's supported Strom Thurmond....loyalty.
"I wanna tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that there's not enough troops in the army to force the Southern people to break down segregation and admit the nigra (or perhaps "******") race into our theaters, into our swimming pools, into our homes, and into our churches."
-Strom Thurmond.
