1) Spread them out on a piece of paper.

2) Run a magnet under the paper. The iron filings will be attracted to the magnet, the lead filings won't.

3) Tip the paper on an angle in order to let the lead slide off. Collect them on a separate sheet of paper.

4) Repeat steps 2 and 3 again with the magnet in order to get any iron filings you missed the first time.

Try using a magnet to separate the iron! Lead is not magnetic. It should take you a minute or two.

The doctor's advice below will only hold iron filings ONTHE PAPER where the magnet is touching the paper. The rest of the iron will slide off the paper.
A smart person (not a doctor of philosophy) will hold the magnet above all the filings and just leave the lead filings below. No tipping and risking a few iron ones to slide off.

Run a magnet over them, the iron will stick to the magnet.
