Isn't it amazing how many guitar players think that Gibson and Fender are so great?

Question

Having been in the business for a long time, I find it curious that there is such a gravitation towards Gibson, Fender, and others. There are many brands that crush the 'big names' as far as sound and workmanship (at much better prices), yet somehow these few giants of commerce have convinced players that their products are superior when in fact they are usually 'just OK'. I concede the fact that these makers were the benchmark of guitars- 50 years ago- but now they are built just like every other production guitar- by machine with a small amount of handwork.

Yea, it seems the name is worth a thousand dollars on some of them. I bought an Alvarez acoustic/electric 12 years ago and I would put its sound quality up against any Fender or Gibson. And it stays in tune like you wouldn't believe. I also have a Gibson semi-hollow body electric and it needs tuning every 5th time i pick it up.

Actually, some Gibsons are still built by hand at the factory in Memphis. But, you do have a great point, and that is true with a lot of things, not just guitars. People will trust name recognition before trying something new. I just got a Breedlove acoustic guitar, and it's awesome. It has a great sound and plays well, and was not made by machine. Just because you haven't heard of it, it doesn't mean it's inferior. I think that's just something you realize over time.

I agree- I've been playing on Washburn guitars for over 15 years and I just love them.
