It is interesting that you posted this question. I did a survey last year for a psych class called "What Does Society Think Of Crossdresses." I used the net, and queried people out in the public at several shopping malls. I also did a lot of research through stacks of articles from magazines and newspapers.
In short, society as a whole (based on the material gathered) frowns on crossdressing. Sad, but true.
Based upon the remarks that were made to me both to my face and through e-mails, I can only theorize that society still needs a lot more education to the fact that crossdressing is not a perversion nor is it psychological problem.
Crossdressing is nothing more than a form of gender expression exhibited through wearing the clothing of the opposite sex. Crossdressing has been around for hundreds of years and only in the recent times (past 80 years) has it been coined that term.
As a matter of fact, women crossdress more than men do. Don't believe me? How often is it that you've seen a women in jeans? Wasn't jeans originally designed for men out west? Yet society never bats an eye.
But a man is a skirt, dress or the sight of a bra outline under the clothing brings about remarks and comments.
To cure this, like I stated earlier, is education to the fact that there is nothing wrong with crossdressing or crossdressers. Only from that point can we eliminate the ignorance, the fear, the hate and anger that goes along with it. After all, it is only clothing.

Dressing up in a solid skirt is fine as long as it's knee length, you shave your legs properly and wearing some decent wedges with a polo shirt on top, hoodie or jacket as appropriate. Part of the problem is not enough crossdressers actually get out there and do it and that needs to change.
Agreed. People are basically afraid of what they don't know. That would change overnight if everyone just did it on Friday and Saturday evening and got out there and enjoyed life just like everyone else does and this is especially true for couples where one knows the other is a crossdresser. You have a right to be free and be who you are. Assert it, get out there and wear something comfortable. I would suggest a denim skirt, decent hose and some wedge booties or boots with a polo shirt and look presentable so that you fit in with the crowd. Enjoy ! :">

I see some reasonale answers in some of the other posts. The problem that many have is deeply rooted in sexism and deeply based prejudices related to gender. This has been changing. What makes most articles of clothing become designaated as male or female? Fifty years ago few women wore slacks; now it is common.

Society likes to judge. Just be yourself and don't care about what they think. You don't need anyone. No one does. People are scared of what they don't understand and of what they don;t know.Like how almost everyone is scared of the dark. Crossdressing is the same way. Don't even let it bother you- people will always be people- good luck :-)

Anything a person can find that's different about you, they will find it offensive or threatening, and use it against you. It doesn't matter if it's your skin-type, clothes, sexuality, or a physical deformation... though the scale of beauty is in the eye of the beholder, everyone judges. Though I don't disagree with you at all, you yourself are judging those that are against cross-dressing. It's very hard to find a middle ground...

its human nature to not like things that aren't the norm, I believe if there are a lot of people crossdressing then people would be more used to it. And besides it is your choice to crossdress and it doesn't matter what others think about it

I think that it's because people are scared of things that they don't understand. They don't know why you're a crossdresser and they don't want to take the time to get to know you and possibly get some insight.

I think its because they really are lying to the public. A man might look like and dress like a woman but that doesnt make him a woman and women sure dont want him in the ladies room and men dont want him in the mens room. Both genders would feel uncomfortable and even violated. It also makes people worry about who they might date "what if she turns out to be a man in disguise??"
People may accept gay and lesbian but crossdressing/transgender does involve intentional lying and I dont think people are ready for that.

Because some people are closed minded jerks who think they know everything. I think everyone should be how they want to be.
