The strength of a baseball player, i.e. throwing hard and hitting 500' bombs, comes from their rib cage down. The better torque you can get from your back hip and torso, when hitting, the faster the bat speed and farther and harder you hit the ball. When pitching it all about the leg drive, how explosive can you be when you drive down the mound.
The game is played between your ears and below your rib cage, everything else follows.
Football players have even bigger legs and booties, it is just hard to tell because of their pads and bigger upper bodies. If you see and NFL game live, you will know what I'm talking about. Guys like Michael Vick, look skinny on TV, really have massive legs and linemen are even bigger.

Baseball Players are lean for the most part. But like that other person said, They have to have strong legs to get optimum power while swinging the bat. Pitchers also use their legs more then their arms for power. The great power pitchers like Ryan and Clemens usually ride a bike before AND after a game as well as do some pretty crazy squats durring the spring training and off season.

Baseball is also a game of sprinting. Sprinting tends to over develop the thighs and gluts (butt). Hockey players tend to have over sized calf muscles because thats where their power lies for skating. Basketballers, Running Backs and Wide Recievers tend to have the same issues as the baseballers because of all the sprinting they do.

If you was out there for 162 games a year your legs would be developed also. Kirby Puckett comes to mind in the 87 WS St. Louis radio stations had a bit about him called BIG BUTT

Playing baseball you use all of your muscles not just your arms. When batting alone you need the strength from your legs to help thrust your body and give you the momentum and strenght to hit the ball. With fielding you need leg muscle to run and support yourself. I think that all sports and positions will make you gain muscle in different areas.

I can only answer for my nephew who is a major league catcher. He is always squating and running... if you notice they use their legs a lot. Some have big arms too. I don't agree on the football player part. I dated one and he had wonderful legs...They use all their muscles in training and practice. It's not just what you see on the field. Hope this has helped.

Michelle hit it right on the head, the hips are one of the main sources for where power is generated to drive the ball.
