Considering that there was no civil war in Iraq before we invaded the country, I would say that we played a pretty major role.

A major or minor role?! The US invasion was the direct cause of the civil war! Does anybody believe that there would be a civil war in iraq now if saddam was still in power?

The Civil War was indeed inevitable because its major cause was economic, not slavery. It was a contest for who was to control the rich lands of the West, the industrial North, or the agrarian South. Two completely diverse areas trying to live under the same system of economics and law. The clash was inevitable and resulted in the Civil War. Chow!!

Well its obvious we played a role. Now the decision (and I dont think this is what your asking so I will refrain from answering a question you did not ask) remains on whether it was a good or bad role, and how we should be handling the civil war to establish a better, more stable government.

The war with the Kurds had been going on for some time. However, the war between the Sunis and the Shiites is all our fault.
It was not so much the war, it was the total failure to do post invasion planing. We allowed looting and general social disorder. We disbanded the army (letting them keep their guns) and gutted the government (to try and remove anyone who supported Sadam). We rounded up Iraqis, searched their homes, and abused their loved ones (remember Abu Greb?). Rumsfeld and Bremmer really screwed the pooch.
