You need to have the right type of feeder for the birds in your area. Some feeders are made for birds that can perch, others are not. Costco has an excellent premium birdseed mix, and a non premium ordinary birdseed. I buy the premium and the birds love it! It has nuts in it and berries, as well as black sunflower seeds, gray sunflower seeds, and many other favorites of the bird. Set up a couple of differendt style feeders, and fill all of them. See which ones empty first, and stick with that type. Place it near a tree and water is nice too if you have a pond, pool or bird bath.
Costco's premium mix is GREAT!

Hi There, Its great that your feeding the wild birds at all, these poor little fellows are being squeezed out with urban developments and completely forgotten about. To attract finches you need a nut feeder, this is tubular wire mesh feeder and the most common feed you will get is peanut, you can expect to see Great, Blue, Coal Taite (sorry about spelling hoping censor will overlook it)Greenfinch, Woodpecker and house sparrow. The gold finch eats only from a seed feeder and I'd recommend buying mixed wild bird seed mix - this mix would include: sunflower, oat, corn and a wide variety of other seeds which are ideal for gold finches. I've three large peanut feeders, which require filling 3time a week and two seed feeders which require filling every day, my bird population I estimate to be about 50 and include robin, blackbird, chaffinch (feeds from the ground) all the Taite family and the gold and green finch. If you have gold finches in the vicinity they will come, but it could take a little time.

Sunflower seeds draw many different species of birds (as well as squirrels).
Suet feeders will draw woodpeckers and other birds too.
But here's a secret: if you really want to entice birds and have them coming often, put out pine nuts. Very expensive unless you buy a 2# bag at Costco for about 14 dollars.
They also like peanuts in the shells (un-salted), roasted or raw.
Enjoy. I love watching birds.

Sunflower hearts (shelled sunflower) will bring them in from miles around, as will millet, peanuts and niger seed. They like granary or malted bread, and put out ripe fruit like apples or pears. Don't forget to put some on the ground as some species lik eto feed low down.
There should be a water source nearby as well.
