There is a process running that takes up most, if not all, of your CPU. The next time this happens hit control+alt+delete and click the processes tab, then click the CPU column twice to see what process is taking up your CPU. Write down the process and get back to me. It may be malware, or it may be something else. I can tell you more if you can get the name of the process.

Let your computer cool down and then restart. When it starts to make the whirring noise, look at the back of the tower and see if the fan is working. It sounds like the power supply fan is not working which will cause it to overheat and then shutdown. Power supply's are cheap and really easy to replace. Check out ebay and you should be able to find a replacement fairly easily. If the fan is still going when you hear the noise, chances are it's the CPU fan. Again, you should be able to buy a second hand fan from ebay. Good luck!

kinda sounds like your processor is overheating. make sure your tower isn't near any heat sources and has space around it to get air. also, check around your case fan to see if there's dust build up. there might be if you live in a dusty environment.
if these don't work, try buying another fan, either for your processor itself or a better one for your tower. you could probably get one at a local radioshack, or at http://www.tigerdirect.com

I would dust the inside of the PC, get some canned air and spray the fans and processers. Make sure you do this while it is off.

blow it out.
You might just have some extra gunk built up in it.
Also try and do a defrag.
hope that helps
