No, why, because I have nothing to do with my family, they are worse than yours believe me, two bob snobs who have spent years looking down their nose at me and my hubby, like you we own our own home, car and have not a penny debt, they are up to their armpits in debt and don't give a hoot about it, they call us boring, I got sick and tired of their nasty and shallow comments, their drink binges that ruined everything, so I walked away and told them to get on been the selfish shallow people they have always been and to get a life and not to bother contacting me until they do, you don't have to put up with the nasty shallowness off your family, never be ashamed of what you are, just be yourself and if they can't handle it and start to quarrel then get yourself and your family out of their because it so isn't worth it.

The key to your question is "the next reunion when it all happens again". Obviously people show up because deep down they want to know how each one is doing. The rich but miserable ones want to see if anyone is more miserable than they are; the broke miserable ones go to ensure that the rich ones are miserable in spite of having money; the average guys go because their wives or moms told them they had to go. Bottom line is the fact that moms and dads and grannies and granpops all want to see how the family has grown and they want to see that their presenece on earth has evolved into some worthy people. Each reunion they probably hope that some of you have matured. If you go to the reunion EXPECTING chaos and unhappiness, i guarantee you that this is exactly what you'll get. If you go with a positive outlook and decide for yourself that you will not participate in any negative conversations and that you will see only the good in people, you will not only have a better time, you will have a good effect on others. A reunion has the purprose of getting together and reminiscing about growing up together. If someone starts a conversation with "Look at Bob over there - up to his ears in debt and yet he's got himself another new Bentley", don't complete the assassination plot. Just look over at good old cousin Bob, smile and say " Hey! Remember Christmas in 1976 - the year it snowed so hard we had to wear three pairs of pants and walked like ducks. Let's go over and have a laugh about that one!" You will change the reunion and be the most beloved offspring at the event.

There is only one time during the last 15 years when my whole family got together and it ended with one brother being kicked out of the house, and another brother excommunicating himself from the rest of us (which was a bit of a blessing actually!). Maybe your family should forget about reunions until certain people grow up!! Good luck with this weekend though.

LOL - gotta LOVE family! I would simply do to your brother what I do to my mom when it's not worth the arguement. Ok - you know you're right - thank you for pointing it out to me. Let him have his moment of superiority while in you're heart you KNOW that you're living a much healthier smarter way ;-) When he has bleeding ulcers and you're able to enjoy a family vacation - he'll get it!!! Good luck ;-)

Nope. I'd have to say that nothing even remotely close to this has ever happened at our family reunions.

no that doesn't happen in my family reunion.
when my family gets together we all laugh and have a good time..
then we sit down and plan the quickest time that we can get together again but that fits into everyone's schedule.
my family is one BIG happy family.

If you must go, just be as polite as you can, tell them "good for you" or great, or you're happy for them when they "brag". Other wise, why put yourself through the aggravation. Is it really worth it?
