Get yourself out there as much as possible. Play as many gigs as you can. Sell your demo (get it copyrighted first!!!!) at your gigs. If you local radio station has a "Homegrown" show for unsigned acts - get your stuff played on it. If you're as good as you say you are, the labels will eventually take notice. Don't waste the time or materials sending your demo to the labels - it'll just get tossed in the garbage. (All the labels have rules against accepting unsolicted material.)
Friends of mine who got signed got noticed because the girlfriend of an A&R person heard their tape and loved it and got him to come see the band. Other friends of mine got signed by playing every gig they could, and ended up showcasing at CBGBs.

start a band,start doing shows,promotion, cut a demo,find a good booking agent and practice 7 days a week.
