Hey wicked_wr...,
I have to weigh in on this one. Absolutely NOT. Who is the judge? That means they have rule over my thoughts. I may disagree with a book, even be disgusted with it, but that is my prerogative. If you stop free speech with one book, you stop the freedoms we are guaranteed in the United States. I am free to not read bad books.
If you are talking in Elementary School, and Junior High - then I do believe we have an obligation not to mold kids with hate and just plain bad thoughts. When they are more mature and educated, they will have the freedom to choose.

No, I don't think banning any book is a good idea. Nazi Germany, Stalinist Russia, both used this technique of controlling what essentially is fredom of thought. In China most books are banned, except Mao's Red Book, which is compulsary. books are private things in many respects, and to some degree, open to interpretation. To control a person'r freedom of thought is to control them. It is also a sure way to get an underground bestseller. Word always outs, and the 'banned/dangerous' becomes desirable; Lady Chatterley's Lover was banned in the 60's but became a best seller, and now a classic studied in schools. The truth will out.

Banning books totally undermines the concept of Freedom of Speech in the United States.

Banning books is wrong, wrong, wrong. Just because someone does not care for some book for some reason does not give them the right to keep others from having access to that book. In the common case of a student's parent not caring for an assigned reading, they have the right to raise their child as they see fit and keep their child from that book, the teacher should have an alternate available in case of trouble, but that parent does not have the right to keep other students from reading that book.

Banning books is never a good idea. If someone does not like a book, no one is forcing them to read it. It starts with books, then movies and television next thing we know all forms of media are banned. no thanks.

Here's a list of books that have been banned in the 1990s. Tell us which ones you agree should be banned. There are some real suprises in this:

No, because people will want to read them more, besides who is anyone to tell anyone what they can and can't read?
Personally, I make it a point to read banned books.
Banning books is just plain ignorant.

You need to be more specific with your question.
If you mean banning them outright, I think that it is a terrible idea. If books were illegal, what would we read. Everything that we do will in turn lead back to reading.

No. People should read books, not ban them. Some people say certain books are "evil" or whatever, but you know what? Evil exists in people, not in books.
