I think that is a really good thought provoking question. But you have to consider to that Africa was also affected by the slavery trade as well as being Colonised by European countries. In fact it wasn't until the late 20th century that South Africa was still under the complete control of European Colonists. But as an African American I can say that I am very happy and fill privileged to be born in America.

It's an interesting question. Well done for managing to asking a sensitive question without being offensive!
What you have to remember is that slavery and the distruction, rape and pillage of Africa are one and the same thing, carried out by the same people. If these people hadn't abducted millions of Africans, and had left Africa well alone, then the world would be a very different place, and many people (black, white, whatever) would want to live there. Consider the natural resources that continent has - by rights it should be very rich.

you mean descendents not ancestors.
I don't think the fact that your great great grandchildren may have a better life justifies slavery.
Not everyone in africa is poor, starving, has AIDS.
Would you rather have been in New Orleans when Katrina struck or in Johanesburg?
And what about the indigenous people in the caribean? A whole people wiped out.
And we would not have the Tate gallery without slavery.
Maybe something good did come out of slavery but only a little good and a lot of bad. The good does not justify the bad.
Out of Nazi Concentration camps came experiments that allowed space travel sooner - but does that justify killing millions?

Part of the reason that Africa is in such a mess right now is because the slavers came in, conquered territories, and took the most valuable members of the communities away. Africa wasn't perfect when the whites came, but it was at least reasonably liveable.
If you take a long enough perspective and look at things at the right angle, just about ANYTHING can be said to have had "good results" including the Holocaust, the Black Plague, and the Spanish Inquisition. That doesn't mean that any of those things were good or just.

It did NOT have a good result -- most people taken from Africa died early deaths after horrific lives.
Much of what's wrong in Africa today is a direct result of non-Africans' mistreatment of Africa.
Most PEOPLE want to stay in their home countries. Of course most Blacks in the US want to stay in the US. This is where they were born, where everyone they know lives -- it's their home.
Saying that the suffering people in the past experienced (slavery, the potato famine, etc.) doesn't count in the equation is calloused -- no, none of that suffering was a good thing.
Suffering sucks.

I don't agree with you. But I guess you can always try to look on the bright side of anything. Blacks didn't have to be bought into America through slavery. They were bought against their own will and many were punished beyond belief. I don't think that kind of scar can be justified as saying it was for the betterment of their children's future.
Put yourself it their place. So if someone took you from the only home you knew and made you a slave. They worked you to death, beat you up when they wanted to, and if you had a sister, they took her too and raped her. You would be okay with that because on the long run your great, great, great grandkids are going to live in a fabulous nation? I would think you would find it as cruel and unjustified.

well I'm of Irish decent but I wasn't or should I say my ancestors were never slaves so never contributed to the good or bad results concerning Africa ..but slavery was a long time ago and us Brits helped to combat it even though we contributed and its to long ago and not going to apologise we did it and so did others ..but if Africa is in a mess which we all are upset and sorry for ..can I just ask why don't the rich African countries help their neighbours and we contribute millions but are still the baddies ....so it appears but maybe its a media thing

your only seeing one side of the story, most black people living here are born here and know nothing much about Africa so why the hell should they want to live in a strange broken place?
Most Africans want to live in the western world because.. yes it seem's to better than living in a war torn country.. But ask yourself how could a country so rich in natural resources be so broke. The answer is obvious and sinister.
Also isnt America stolen land belonging to no Native Americans, not white people?

I don't think so because not until recently have African Americans started living good lives. They couldnt even sit next to a white person 50 years ago. 50 years ago is not a long time. And a lot of people immigrated over to the US so slavery wasnt really a good thing? My dad is black my mom is Indian they came to the US on their own and thank god I didn't have an enslaved family, well at least not in America.

*********** READ AND EDUCATE YOURSELF!! ****************
Firstly in answer to people like "Lotus", who thinks "whites" ruined "Mother Africa" - blacks were capturing and enslaving each other well before the "whites" came in, and continued after the British/American/Spanish/Dutch abolished slavery. And it was the black people of Africa who were rounding up other black people to "sell" them to the white slave masters!! So not so innocent black people after all.
ALSO, YOU IGNORANT BLACK RACISTS, NORTHERN BLACK AFRICANS WERE ENSLAVING WHITE EUROPEANS BEFORE THE BLACK SLAVE TRADE WAS EVEN CREATED!!!!
Check your history Lotus...and get that chip off your shoulder..
The Barbary coast circa 1530-1780, white Europeans were enslaved by Blacks!! Approximate figures, 1.25 MILLION white slaves.
So, Lotus, what's your excuse now for the 50% black prison population in the US, with only 12% of the US actually black?
Also, slavery is still happening today!! and have a guess where Lotus??
"We're oppressed, were oppressed!!" - my ****, your just a bunch of excuse ridden thugs, using a 200 year old excuse for why your lazy and criminal. And not because I'm a racist, but because the statistics show it - it's bad in the UK, even worse in the US.
Immigration of African and Asian immigrants has turned the US and UK into crime ridden pits. They've ruined two of the greatest countries the world has ever known, if our forefathers knew then what we know now, an African or Asian (Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi/Sri Lanka'n) would never be allowed to set foot on our lands.
