I am wondering the worth of one of my books. It is The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. It is a cloth-bound, first edition and first printing with a big fold-out map in the back. The book is in mint condition.

Check out eBay to see if you can find anything similar. That'll give you a ballpark idea. If you want something more accurate, take it to a used book seller or an antique shop. They may be able to give you an estimate of the value or at least point you towards helpful price guides or appraisers.

A search for a first edition of the Silmarillion at
Advanced Book Exchange gave 699 examples, with prices from $2101 to under $3 with no dust-jacket!

A lot is going to depend on the exact version and condition!

Your best bet is to try the Sothbey's and Christie's auction house website. They have experts that know how to appraise any book and give the best quotes on how much it is worth. For my money, you have a winner.

if you include the ISBN number, you can check for comparable books on www.abebooks.com
The Silmarillion ranges for $1.00 all the way up to $2000.00 but it depends on the ISBN and other factors.
