YIKES,,, turn off the water at the shut off below the toilet, stop blaming the spouse or the plunger,,,, in fact stop needing the plunger by finding out WHY the toilet over flows on a regular basis.

Turn the water off at the meter and rent a snake at a rental place. Try and snake out the toilet and then go to the clean-out outside of the house and try to snake that out also. Another neat little thing is the rubber balloon like gadget you screw onto the end of the garden hose. Run it down into the stopped up drain (sink, toilet, etc) and turn on the water. It works. They are at the hardware store and are cheap. Call the store and ask for the price. They will know what you are talking about if you describe it to them and what you are needing.

Turn the water off. Then go buy a plunger. Or take a wire hangar. and unbend it. Try to unclog the toilet with the curved part of the hangar.

Turn the water off and tell her to get to the hardware store and buy a new plunger--and a new power tool for you while she's at it.

Pour an entire gallon of bleach into the toliet, unless it is already overflowing. Let is set for at least 4-6 hours. Sometimes it will dissolve the clog by itself.

Turn the water off at the base of the toilet bowl. Fill a mop bucket with water and pour it directly into the drain hole of the toilet from waist height.
Worked for me. Oh, I'm 5'8" your waist will be higher or lower than mine. erm, good luck?
