Sould the practice of abortion be made illegal? How about contraceptive pills and procedures? Should there be a widespread ban on this practice, or applicable laws for each trimester of pregnancy?

No, for all the reasons that I'm sure people will articulate later (I'ma guy so I don't have a right; people will go back to getting backroom abortions or flying to France; there's a fundamental right to privacy; etc). Originally, Roe v. Wade was a "trimester"-type system, but that was replaced in Planned Parenthood v. Casey to the more elastic idea of "viability." There is practically still the idea that it's pretty hard to regulate the abortion procedure in the first trimester; some regulations in the second; and lots of regulations (perhaps even bans except to save the life or health of the mother) in the third, or after viability.

The interesting question you raise is related to the "slippery slope" of abortion proceedures. If the surgical procedure is illegal because it terminates the pregnancy of a fertilized egg, then what about an IUD (a device implanted in the utereus to irritate the lining and prohibit a fertilized egg from attaching). Does life begin at conception or does life begin at implantation? Or the morning after pill --which will be shortly available without a prescription-- same debate. I can't imagine that most Americans would believe that they shouldn't have access to contraception (and very old supreme court precedent supports this constitutionally), but what is the difference, medically, from an early first-trimester abortion and an IUD?

Abortion should be illegal. 1.5 million babies are executed everywhere without even a fair trial. Some people say abortion should be legal because if it did become illegal people would have them underground illegally. This argument is very weak to make abortion illegal. Here is why:

Pots illegal but has stopped people from hitting up, so lets make it legal.
Murder hasn't stop serial killers from killing people, so lets make it legal.
Credit card fraud hasn't stopped people from using other peoples credit cards to make unauthorized purchases, so lets make it legal.
The fact that abortion is wrong, is the reason their should be a ban on the practice. Statistics show that 97% of abortions occur because its a nice and convenient way out, instead of raising the baby. The other 2% goes to rape and incest. Their is an easy solution to the incest problem, STOP HAVING SEX WITH YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS. Just don't sleep with anybody in your family, case closed. Incest is totally wrong and totally uncalled for. As for rap, the baby shouldn't be executed for the crime it's father committed. You should be going after the babies father, not the baby itself. If you don't want it that's fine, then just put it up for adoption. Why should the innocent baby be punished for a crime it didn't commit. The other 1% goes to the danger of the mother. This is very very rare. If the mother is going to die before the baby is born, then the only chose then would be to terminate her pregnancy. If the mother dies, then the baby also dies, so two people die instead of 1. If the baby can be delivered early then the mother should have a sea section, and put the baby on life support and hope for the best. Technology is advancing all the time. If the baby is delivered early their is still a chance that it could survive. Some people do not believe the baby is a human, if you look at the abortion photos, then you can see that it is clearly human. If abortion would be illegal, then it would force people to have no sex at all until their ready, or practice safer sex practices. People that are pro-life back it up with scientific evidences, DNA, and medical evidence to back up their claim. Pro-Choice back up their claims on opinions and myths. They have weak arguments that can easily be destroyed. The most common argument is, "Its my body I can do what ever I want with it." This is totally not true. You cannot take illegal drugs and sell your body for sex even though its your body. This is just one example of what people cannot do with their bodies. Their are so many arguments to abortion it ain't funny. People that support abortion don't even consider adoption. Adoption may have its own set of problems, but at least the baby gets to live. The bottom line is abortion is murder and that's the reason it should be outlawed.

I believe there should be less abortions. How about that?

With respect to most above comments, I have always noticed that the vast majorty of parties on both sides of the issue never respect the opinions of the other side and are driven entirely by dogmatic views, whether religious, legal, or social.

One the one hand, most "pro-choice" supporters and feminists think it is entirely about the CIVIL RIGHT of the woman to have her body invaded by a fetus for nine months. They believe we, as a society, should grant no deference whatsoever to the fetus as a potential human being and summarily dismiss any religious or philosophical view that life begins at conception within the public sphere. They believe the right is absolute and should not be interfered with by offering competing alternatives (e.g., adoption) or what opinion the man who impregnated the woman should have (even if the man has never abused the woman at all).

On the other hand, the vast majority on the "pro-life" side believe that life begins at conception, and therefore, abortion is murder and anyone who supports a pro-choice position is a murderer - PERIOD. They cannot respect opinions that some people may believe (with good intentions and good faith, as a philosophical or spiritual matter) that life begins not at conception, but at viability (as is the case with the Supreme Court) or birth. They cannot even respect that the issue of where life begins is subject to debate (despite the fact that their Bible does not come down either way) and cannot even entertain the possibility of allowing each individual to make his or her own moral decision about where life begins or does not begin without the government having to step in. Nor do they give any deference to the QUALITY OF LIFE that an unwanted child faces or that people will continue to get abortions (unsafe ones) even if banned.

No, not completely. There are definite situations where abortion should be allowed and I think having it completely illegal would be a bad thing.

Religious people (and I am religious) will say differently I know, but we have freedom of religion in this country, and using a religious reason does not hold water in a society where someone is free to have no religion at all.

A hypothetical situation: young teenage girl is raped. She should not be forced to carry that child and suffer through a nine month pregnancy...going to school, facing ridicule from naysayers who don't know how she got pregnant so young. In this case, waiting and giving it up for adoption is not the best case scenario in my opinion.

Another hypothetical situation: Woman gets pregnant, for whatever specific medical issue that has arrisen, she is in grave danger if she carries this baby. She has other children that need to be cared for. She should not be forced to carry that baby and take the chance of not living to raise the other children she has in her home.

It's not always about someone getting pregnant by accident and not wanting to keep the baby. I personally do not agree at all with that scenario and think its just a lame and pathetic excuse to have an abortion. It just is, and it really stinks that people get abortions for that reason. It doesn't mean it should be completely illegal though in my opinion!!

Even the most hard-line pro lifers are hard pressed to say that all abortion is illegal all the time. Most would agree that exceptions for situations where the mother's life is in danger, or rape and/or incest should be carved out.

Furthermore, it can be shown that society as a whole is benefitted when people have the choice as to whether or not they are prepared to undertake the responsibilities of parenthood. Banning contraceptives and abortions would increase the number of children born to people that really didn't want the child.

In many situations, abortion (and to a much lesser degree contraceptive medications) is the lesser of two evils. As a member of society, I would hope that if a child is to be born, he or she would be born into a loving environment, and not be forced into existance through the application of draconian laws rooted in religious belief.

I as a devoted mother have to say abortions should be illegal unless it pertains to ones health..I had 3 sons and 1 daughter.. I taught them very high morals. Even this was not bullet proof.. My daughter at the age 15 became pregnant. Yes we had a choice of her having an abortion or keeping the baby. We all decided to keep the baby although we knew we didn,t have the facilities for a new born child with its mother in our home... We also were not financially able to support the two of them at the time.. We were a well thought of family, let alone the imbarrassiment it brought upon our household... You know, all of the above is in the mind.. All these things goes through a persons mind when something like this happens and even more.. Needless to say. when the baby was born we were so thankful , so very thankful we all decided to keep the baby from the very beginning.. He is now grown and a college professor.. and a very handsome man... Has been a real asset to socitaty.

I do not like abortion, but I also do not feel that I have a right to tell people what they can do with their bodies. I do not want to see abortion go underground again. Many people have either forgotten what it was, or are too young to remember the bad old back alley and coat hanger days when abortion was illegal. The simple fact is that if people want abortions they are going to get them whether it is legal or not. I do however draw the line at the abomination known as partial birth abortion, this practice is unquestionably murder and should be outlawed.

None. State rules are overridden by Federal rules, which state that abortion is criminal in the U. S. as an entire. So, states can "say" that abortion is illegitimate interior of their borders, however the federal regulation supercedes it.

No.

Even if you don't like it you should know that outlawing it won't get rid of it, it will only make it more dangerous.

We tried outlawing alchohol once, and it became more of a problem then when it was legal.

Amsterdam has a low crime rate and low hard drug usage, marijuana is legal there.

Outlawing things doesn't make them go away.

Abortions need to remain safe, legal and acsessable.

abortion, i think, should be illegal because u are actually killing something that is not apart of the mother. it is in the mother.... but not apart of the mother. as soon as sperm and egg collide, the new embryo has its own DNA. its own genetic make up that is different from the mothers. blood between thmother and the child never meet, unless by accident durring birth. it grows by itself, though it uses nutrients from the mother's body.by the time most people figure out they are pregnant, they have a brain and a heart breat. and at any rate, the baby did nothing to deserve to not have a chance at life.
as far as contraceptives and the like are involved, to each his own, but i myself donot like them.
