Depends where it is going. I think that right now Arena football is bigger then Hockey in the U.S. If you only go by the AFL though I am not sure. I'm also not sure how long the fad will last. See right now you have alot of independent Arena and Indoor leagues popping up. Some are bound to succeed and some will fail. They also play by different rules then the AFL. I like my local Indoor Football League, although the rules are slightly different then the AFL and I think they improved teh rules.

The AFL has been around since 1987. Attendance has increased a lot over the last few years (over 12,000 a game), they have created a minor league system in 2000 (af2) and plan to add expansion teams. That doesn't sound like something that isn't doing well to me. They have a TV deal with FSN and Versus (which is one of the only places you can see NHL games). I think that the NHL is still bigger but only because the AFL is competing with the NFL and college as far as mainstream fans. The AFL season starts around the end of the NFL playoffs so they don't have to compete for time there, which is pretty good exposure for football fans still craving football. I think it is still bigger than the CFL because the CFL is really only big in Canada. Kurt Warner did a lot to boost the popularity of the AFL after winning a Super Bowl with the Rams and a couple of MVP's.

I think it all depends on how it's marketed. Oklahoma City (where I live) has an AFL2 (?) team called the YardDawgz. Ticket prices are pretty reasonable, they have events planned around fans bringing their kids, and the season doesn't conflict with high school or college football. Have never been to a game, but they seem to be doing okay...then again, not much to do here in Oklahoma:).
As far as passing hockey, that may depend on what part of the country they play in. The NHL killed itself for years, if not forever, with the lockout last year. Aren't their games only available nationally on something called Versus? Not all cable systems carry that, so to not have a TV deal with ESPN or Fox has to hurt....

If you average it out the AFL it isn't close to the NHL In Canada hockey is and probably will always be the number one sport. Although in Canada we do get a bunch of AFL games on cable the ratings are really low. Attendance wise in America there is way more attendance in NHL games then arena game’s. The only reason that AFL has slightly increased in fan support is because of the NHL lookout. The NHL lookout is the main reason why there is no T.V. contract with ESPN in the U.S for NHL games. I think that the NHL is a top 5 sport in Canada and the U.S. I can’t see the AFL lasting long either because there are many other leagues like the NFL, NCAA, and CFL. No big name payers have ever really came from the AFL that I can remember.
