When you set up an e-mail program like Outlook or Outlook Express, you need to specify Where the computer is located that you get your e-mail from. An on-line "server" provides this, to hold this mail until you have downloaded it. That server is called the POP server (Post Office Protocol)

You also need to specify the on-line computer that will SEND your email. This is not necessarilly the same server that gets your e-mail. Often, this is the computer that you have access through your Internet Service Provider. This is the SMTP server (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)

Good luck and Happy Computing!

POP3 is a commonly implemented method of delivering email from the mail server to the client machine. Other methods include IMAP and Microsoft Exchange. The POP3 server specified in a person's email program specifies where to look for email that is directed to a particular email address. This should never be changed unless told to by the ISP or company IT department that provides the email address. ...

protocol for sending e-mail messages between servers; most e-mail systems that send mail over the Internet use SMTP to send messages from one server to another; the messages can then be retrieved with an e-mail client using either POP or IMAP; in addition, SMTP is generally used to send messages from a mail client to a mail server; this is why you need to specify both the POP or IMAP server and the SMTP server when you configure your e-mail application

Pop and smtp servers handle your incoming and outgoing mail, respectively. The incoming mail is normally also stored, prior to being downloaded to your pc. For yahoo these are
pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk and
smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk
although it might be different for 360 mail -I haven't checked that bit. Full setup details are on your other question.

once you've the free yahoo digital mail service, then forget it because you isn't waiting to configure Outlook with yahoo... with the intention to attempt this, you would possibly want to get yahoo plus (paid digital mail service)

You can't use POP3 with free Yahoo accounts. If you have a paid account, check your welcome e-mail and the docs that came with your DSL modem.
