Certainly some of coaching basketball is Xs and Os-- the technical part, and that does not take leadership. It takes knowledge of the game. But at least equally important is the creation of a team -- to get 10-12 people working together. To get some people to accept roles that they may not feel comfortable with -- such as coming off the bench, or even playing very little. To have a good player accept their role as a "go to" person. To inspire them to play hard, even when they are tired and maybe a little dejected. That takes leadership. In our society, how many people really take responsibility for the success or failure of what happens around them. In coaching, your team must accept responsibility and develop an understanding for their good play and their failures. This does take leadership.

How else would you get egotistical players to listen to you if you weren't a leader? You must be a leader. But, also you need to be a leader amongst leaders. You see you will have players on your team that can impact other players, therby making them leaders. If you can sway that player or convince them to do something. You can simultaneously convince the other players who may be impacted by that one players leadership skills.
So, what does leadership have to do with coaching a basketball team? Apparently it has more to do with coaching a basketball team, or any team for that matter, than most would care to know.
