Philosophically, I think that some thinkers have conceived of freedom in the negative, as freedom FROM constraint, while others have seen it in a positive sense, that true freedom as a political value, only exists in a civil society where we participate as citizens (read Aristotle). That there is no "freedom" in a state of nature, no rights as such.
