i have to make metaphors for a class project. and my rough draft was far from on the point. i thought i understood, but when a classmate edited it, she told me that is must be compared to an object(physical). is she correct or wrong? And if you could, would you give me examples of a metaphor with the beginning: "Family is"........? Any other advice would be much appreciated if you have it! thanks tons!!!

metaphor and simile are fig of speeches which brings out comparisons between two different things .as in a simile we say -she sings sweetly like a bird. but the same comparison may be drawn in a statement -she is a bird. the inference is the same, relates to the sweet voice of the girl. and this is the metaphoric usage.

a metaphor is when you use a word (that doesn't really apply) to describe something else. it's kinda like 2 words that have nothing to do with each other ordinarily, but in a different sense, or with a different "meaning" they work together. i hope i didn't confuse you more.
the world is an onion.
a family is a garden.

Family is a rock you can cling to when you're drowning.

Read the Wiki definition below and maybe that'll help you more with understanding the concept
