What does this mean: “he was little or nothing but life.”

It could mean two things:
1. He didn't do much except breathe.
2. He was full of life (in a way that would inspire others).

Well, it seems to be taken out of context...but, I would suggest that it would mean that the person they are talking about has little material possessions, status, or capital...so, all he has is his life (health).

I would guess that there was little going for him beyond the mere biological fact that he was a living organism. No meaning or purpose to his existence.
