i live 35 miles north of harriburg and not all areas in harrisburg are "safe". they do have alot of malls there and it's definately safer than philly, but it's not a city you'd really wanna live in. if you live on the outskirts, it would be much better as far as safety and $$$. as i said i live north of harrisburg, many people in my town and surrounding areas commute to harrisburg because the cost of living is so high there. rent in my area for a three bedroom house with a yard is around $350-500, in the town of harrisburg you pay that for an apartment. even with the price of gas, it's still cheaper to live where i do and sit an hour in rush hour traffic than to live there and pay big bucks. if you are looking for a retirement community, take a look in Pine Grove PA they have a nice place called School Yard Square and a new one that just opened called Watergait or Watergate assisted living. much cheaper, much nicer.

I'm in my late 40s, but I hope I count. There are museums, the riverfront and City Island, wonderful neighborhoods to walk around (such as Bellevue Park and Italian Lake), annual festivals (on Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends), "3rd in the Burg" (art walks on the 3rd Friday of the month during the warm months), the Harrisburg Senators (AA baseball) to name a few.

It would be great if that 55 year old wants something slow to "no" pace. There is NOTHING to do in Harrisburg but count the politicians.
