Yes, this is in fact a trivia question - what exactly is an octothorpe? [Also spelled octothorp in various places.]

Before you go running to the internet to look it up, have fun with these hints:

1) Hold on, you probably have seen this every day!

2) You can hash this one out just from the clues.

3) I'm not going to pound the answer into your head once you get it, don't worry.

The octothorp is a shy and retiring beast. It should be coaxed, neigh cajoled into taking daily walks. You should accompany your pet during these walks, which are healthful and life extending for your pet. An octothorp leash is mandatory as their eyesight is notoriously poor, and they are apt to step into traffic with potentially disasterous results.
There are compensations for having such a pet. They are extrememly docile, cause little or no trouble, nor inconvenience and hardly ever need feeding.
Please do not refer to them as a "pound key" as they may take this as an intent to do them bodily harm, (you wouldn't fancy being pounded, would you?).
Again congratulations on your choice of a truely wonderful pet.
Dan.

I was just thinking about touching it a little while ago, when my wife walked into the room and eyed me suspiciously. Embarrassed, I quickly turned off the computer and went back to doing my chores. I might try again later, when she leaves to go shopping. Is it ok to talk about such things in here??

Hi!

An octothorpe is another name for the "pound sign" (#).
