Oliver Cromwell is reputed to have said that as the poster above said to Lely- but actually probably never did. The quotation is apocrypal and anyway doesn't really help sum up Cromwell as a man- he was far from dour, loved plays, art, dancing and music. Go and read Roy Sherwood on the Cromwellian court to find that out.

Oliver Cromwell was born in Huntingdon on April 25th 1599.
Close to the correct quotation, however not quite right! As to the oft used phrase, yes quite correct.
“Mr Lely, I desire you would use all your skill to paint your picture truly like me, and not flatter me at all; but remark all these roughness, pimples, warts, and everything as you see me; otherwise I will never pay a farthing for it.”
Cromwell on having his portrait painted, in Horace Walpole, anecdotes of painting.
