I work inside a small store for 10 hours a day. How can I keep myself from getting frustrated?

I apreciate my customers extremely and converse with them a lot. I guess what my real issue is that when there are no customers, the solitude gets to me.

There are no worthless or unworthy jobs. You see your store as a "dead-end" place with no importance. Try being more objective and really look at the store and your customers. If this is a convenience store (you didn't say), then you are offering convenience to people. For the low income person without a car, you are the only place he/she can walk to and buy necessities. For a senior or lonely person, you may be the only human they will interact with this week. For a person going into depression, your smile or words may be the difference between wanting to live or die. For the shop owner, your presence means he can get some much-deserved sleep, earn money to pay taxes which provide services, and maybe put his kids through college. I stopped working fulltime years ago but, out of boredom, still work part-time at small retail outlets. The days could be mind-numbing if i chose to sit and vegetate. I don't. I look around and see what needs to be done. Minutes can turn into hours and hours pass into a completed day when you keep yourself busy. Have you LOOKED at all the products you sell? When a customer asks for something do you know exactly where it is? Have you looked at items that you have never used and wonder what it is used for, who uses it, how and where it's made? You would be amazed at how interesting work and life can become if you show some interest. You would be amazed at how appreciative and friendly the customers (and your boss) would be if you actually converes with customers and had unlimited information to share. Wouldn't it be a kick if Bill Gates came in and asked you for an obscure item and you replied with some really important fact and then he offered you a job with him?! This is not unreal - people have been discovered in all sorts of places. Interesting, interested, alive people always get opportunities. I cannot guarantee that someone will come in and offer you the job of your dreams but I can absolutely guarantee that if you open yourself to the world and take a more positive approach to life and work, you will become a far happier person. And happy people attract good things! By the way , have you grabbed some Windex and cleaned the windows? dusted the shelves? polished the register? If all that doesn't fill your day, go to the library and take out a book on learning the language of some of your ethnic customers...you'll sure win brownie points of you greet a new american in his mother language!

Just think about the homeless man I gave some leftovers to at a restaurant yesterday night. It could always be worse. Plan for your future, learn about investing or starting your own business, get a hobby, think about that hobby at work, think about God, etc.
