I have several antique pocket knives that belonged to my grandfather and father. Now I want to clean them and pass them on to my grandchildren. I have a buffing wheel with a Makita grinder, but what compound should I use?

Jeweler's rouge will brighten them. It is mildly abrassive. You could try Bartender's Friend or Bon Ami, also low abrassive.

Oil (gun cleaning oil works best but you could use 3 in 1 oil - it's really too thin though) and fine steel wool. Apply a liberal amount of oil, let it set a few minutes and rub gently with steel wool. Chances are that the residue will be rust colored to black. That's OK. Wipe off with cloth. Repeat til clean. Apply thin coat of oil to preserve the metal. If the rust is very bad, the blade may have pits in the metal where the rust has eaten away the metal. You can't do anything for this problem, but at least you will stop the deterioration once you've cleaned it.
