9-(-2)(-7)=?
rules for the order : multiply/divide first
add/substract after

=> 9-(-2)(-7)= 9 - ((-2)*(-7)) = 9 - (+14) = 9 +(-14) = (-5)

I tried to be very explicit!! sorry if it's too much explicit!!

Dave
A good rule for remenbering the rules of opertions is

P E M D A S

Which stands for

" Please excuse my dear aunt sarah "

P = Do the opertions inside rhe inmost pair of parentheses , bracres , or brakets first
ex. ( 2 + { 3 x 3 } - 3 ) = 2 + 9 - 3

E = do the opertion of exponents next
ex. = 3^3 ( the number of 3 raised to the power of 3)

M = Do the opertion of multiplication

D = do the opertion of division

A = do thr opertion of addition

S = do the opertion of subtraction

the only except to this is
" When the opertions of division or mulitplication appears side by side do the opertion that appears first "

ex. ( 3 x 4 ) + 3 / 4

in the opertion above you wuold do the multiplication first

One more exception " When addition and subtraction appears side by side do the opertion that appears first

now your problem

9 - ( - 2 )( - 7 ) this should / could be rewritten as

9 + ( 2 ) ( - 7 ) { a hint I hope you know when you place parentheses side by side it mrans to multiply ! )
9 + -14 ( I get negative 14 from this rule : A negative number " times " a positive number is a = to a negative number )
-5

here more help
( - ) x ( - ) = +

( + ) x ( + ) = +

( - ) x ( + ) = -

Order of operations = Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, then Subtraction.

1. -2 * -7 = +14, so 9-14 = -5
2. 5^2 = 25 - 3 = 22

For order of operations, use the phrase Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. Where the first letter stands for the function above.

Step one: (-2)x(-7) = 14
Always do the multiplication and division part of a problem first, and remember that a negative multiplied by a negative equals a positive.

Step two: 9-14 = -5

That's your final answer, presuming I'm reading the problem correctly as you've written it.

Second Problem:

Step One: 5^2 = 25

Now just do the subtraction, and you're all set!

9-14=-5

the rules = BIDMAS
Brackets, Indices, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction

so..
9 - (-2)(-7)
multiply out brackets first, -2 x -7 = +14
9 - +14 = - 5

also 2nd one...

-5^2 - 3
no brackets, so do indices first
(-5)^2 = 25
so 25 - 3 = 22

thats as long as it's (-5)^2 and not -(5^2)?

They are asking you to perform certain operations according to the specified order in your text book. When doing calculations you always start within grouping symbols, the complete exponential calculations then multiplication and division and then addition and subtraction.

That is all they are asking of you here. The problem you have here is nine minus (a negative 2 times a negative 7). You would do the multiplication of -2 * -7 first and then subtract the result from nine.

Have fun

Operations in parentheses first, then exponents, then multiplication, then addition. Just consider division and subtraction to be inverse multiplication and addition of a negative number (respectively) and you can work with everything in these two scenarios. In your first scenario you basically have the equivalent of 9*-1*-2*-7 with parenthesis simply offering a different notation.

Brackets could want for use:- question one million (5/6)x + (one million/2)x (5/6)x + (3/6)x (8/6)x (4/3)x question 2 examining this as:- 7/(x - 2) - 4/(x + 3) [ 7(x + 3) - 4(x - 2) ] / [ (x - 2)(x + 3) ] ( 3x + 29 ) / [ (x - 2)(x + 3) ] pslack of brackets finally leads to conflicting strategies. Use brackets in 2008!!!!
