I am going to assume you are referring to a woman.
Detecting a scam or if the person is real is easy if you know what to look for.
1) If she contacted you through Yahoo or Match.com it is a scam. To send letters through those sites require you to join and they would need a credit card to do so. 99.9% of Russian women do not have credit cards.
2) Are the letters general. When you ask her a question does she give specific answers to your question or does she even answer them. Scamers are writing a lot of letters to different people so they do not have time to go through all the details of every letter.
3) Does she ask for money to come and visit you.
In order for the two of you to meet. YOU will have to go there and meet her. She will never be issued a visa to come to the US and meet with you..
4) Phone number. If she refuses to give you a phone number it is a scam. If she is real she has a way for you to call her. Work, home, cell, or friend.
I have dealt with scammers and read a lot about them on the Internet. Although I have never sent money to them I have been disappointed. If you are interested about meeting a Russian Woman I would recommend Elena's Models . They also have a scammers guide that is available. I can not promise you true love but I can vouch that the person you correspond with will be real.

No. You're talking to them, not I... :)

Seriously, though, Russia is a big place. Russian language can be bent in a variety of ways depending on where in Russia you are (people in Bryansk talk differently from people in Kostroma). To make matters even worse, about 20% of Russian citizens are not ethnic Russians and may thus speak Russian with an accent.
