Becuase the Koran is a Muslim's Holy Book. Personally I think they should just get rid of this "swearing in on a Holy Book" entirely. I don't think such a swearing in ever stopped someone from violating an oath of office. Just have them personally affirm that they will obey the rules of Congress and uphold the constitution.

Jews can be sworn in using the Torah. So why not a Muslim using the Koran. It would seem to me what good is an oath over a book you don't believe in? What you should ask is what is the procedure when the person is an atheist? He has no holy book at all. I would suggest that swearing over holy books be tossed with all the other obsolete ideas and they should swear over a copy of the constitution and bill of rights. That way there should be no controversy.

Heard a narrative at the moment on NPR concerning this situation. The Koran they're making use of for swearing in belonged to Thomas Jefferson and the e book has historic fee by way of its provenance. also, the swearing in at the same time as he's making use of the Koran is a better casual affair because he's re-elected. Jefferson had received the e book as a foundation for reading regulation. for sure the Koran brings up a large style of emotional subject matters for our usa (by way of GWB) yet all instructed, he's swearing to uphold the structure of the united states no longer Muslim regulation or beliefs. Its only a holy e book. you are able to hardly study comic books or television education guide to the Koran or Bible.

Are they required to use any 'holy book'? What about Atheists? For a Muslim to swear on the Koran would probably have the same meaning to them as swearing on the Bible has to Christians. I generally believe most "separation of Church and State" arguments are bogus. In this case, I see a legitimate "Freedom of Religion".

No Bible. Would you swear on a Koran? Since you ask the question I assume you have little knowledge of Muslim beliefs. I assume you wouldn't want to do that because your a Christian. We the people are not all Christians. Or Jews who swear on the Old testament. Much to the dismay of Christians we do not have an Theocracy.

I think it makes more sense for them to swear an oath on a book that is meaningful to them. If you force them to swear on the bible you might as well force them to swear on a stake of copy paper.

Because the US as you think you know it does not exist any longer. The Constitution and Bill of Rights have been abolished.
