Are open prisons in the uk a sham, they run on the same principles as a 50's british holiday resort like hi-de-hi or something, if prisoners are allowed to walk free do think officials should be shocked when they scarper, who is in favour of 23 hour lock downs.

Open prisons are a good idea - and don't get the idea that they are some sort of holiday camp!
The whole point of them is to a) provide cheaper accommodation for low risk prisoners, thus freeing up space for higher risk prisoners in category A,B or C prisons and b) getting prisoners who have been in higher category prisons ready for release back into the community.
punishment is only one part of a prison sentence; rehabilitation is another and the open prison do a good job with this.
Considering the number of prisoners who are in open prisons at any time the number walking out is very small.
Lock downs are inhumane and help no-one. The prisoners become frustrated and potentially violent, leaving prison officers more vulnerable to attack. Prisoners become institutionalised and cannot receive the help and education that may keep them from re-offending on release.

I agree that prisoners should be in prisons and not holiday camps!
When I was younger I was in a christian band that sang in prisons (on Sundays). One time were went to sing at an open prison but had to wai for an hour becasue two guys had escaped. This was a rare occurance as any escapee had to return to a proper prison on their recapture. The idea of the open prison was to integrate the prisoners back into society when nearing the end of their sentance. They would work outside the prison too.

I do not believe in 23 hour lock downs , what i believe is that prison should be a place you definitely do not want to go back to. it should be 8 hours of unrelenting hard work , a thing nearly all of them avoid like the plague and any money they earn should go to recompense there victims , after work they should be given something to occupy there minds not TV and video games something that would stretch theire imagination and perhaps give them a goal for there future

This is a big con foisted on the public. Prisoners are downgraded from high to low risk and sent to them because they have fewer staff due to the prisoners now being "Non Dangerous" overnight.
When one walks out, they dont actually escape, the police warnings are DO NOT APPROACH.
Its all to do with saving money, no consideration is given to the lives these people ruin.

The only thing that makes an open prison a prison is the name. Otherwise we could refer to it as a hotel, at which you are given everything for free.

I'm in favour of a 23 hour lock down!! If you done something wrong you go to prison to suffer......not to sit around with luxuries and stuff!! Once you've done your time then off you go.

There is an open prison like these ones in Corsica for selected inmates. and they reoffend less than inmates from any other prisons in France. I think it's an interesting concept.
