Someone told me that the more correct terms are "Roma," and "Native Alaskan" or "Aleut."

Gypsy is from 'Egyptian' as the slightly darker skin of those peoples led the English to think they were from Egypt. As it is therefore inaccurate, I guess to some extent a racial slur. They call themselves 'Romany', not Roma. In the UK the politically correct term is now 'traveller' however. As to the inhabitants of the far north, I am not sure why the term 'Eskimo' has fallen into disrepute. It comes from the C18 expression 'esquimawes' in its turn from the Abnaki* word 'esquimanstic' meaning eaters of raw flesh (*Native American tribe from Maine and Quebec) I guess the reason it is considered none pc, if not a direct slur, is because it is not the word they themselves use to describe their race. However, I have recently read (can't find the source now) that the word 'Inuit' is equally incorrect, as they having differing names to describe different clans or tribes. The questionners 'Aleut' is wrong as they are people inhabiting the Aleutian Islands and SW Alaska related to the - you've guessed it - Eskimoes/Inuit. Which leads me to the point - if it is wrong for us to use the 'E' word - because that is not the word the peoples themselves use, is it correct for us English speakers to call the inhabitants of the large country in central northern Europe 'Germans' when they call themselves 'Deutsche'?

Have never considered "Eskimo" to be an ethnic slur. However "Gypsy" has been a known term used in judgment of others for years.

I had an Apache tell me not long ago that the American Indians didn't like the term Native Americans as anyone born here in America is a native.

He prefers Apache first since that is his tribe and American Indian second. As he pointed out, the term Indian applied first to American Indians. They were called that before natives of India were. At the time of Columbus, people of India were called Hindis.

If you do not know the particular tribe you are talking about, American Indian IS acceptable to the American Indians. It is the politically correct folk who have tried to change it and not the majority of Indians.

eskimo was always a racial slur, first used by other natives. And to the poster above, perhaps your Apache friend likes being identified incorrectly, but in Canada we are aboriginals, natives or First Nations.

Oh puhleeze!

I think the Jews are the ONLY ones that don't complain for being called for what they are.

Eskimo's are inuets... Polar gypsies actually because they are nomadic!

Gypsy is a term used because there are too many tribes to break it down to just one... "Gypsy" began in India but they are all over the world now and can't really be catagorized by anything but gypsy. Roma is only one tribe of many! I would be more insulted for being called something I am not than something I am...

Remember School house rock? Rufus xaviar Sasparilla?

Maybe we should just start calling everything pronouns "She" and " he" and "it" and "Them" just to keep people from whining about the very painfully obvious!

Lyrics & Music by: Kathy Mandry & Bob Dorough
Performed by: Jack Sheldon.

Now I have a friend named Rufus Xavier Sasparilla,
and I could say that Rufus found a kangaroo
That followed Rufus home
And now that kangaroo belongs
To Rufus Xavier Sasparilla
Whew! I could say that, but I don't have to
'Cause I have pronouns I can say,
HE found a kangaroo that followed HIM home
And now IT is HIS
You see, HE, HIM and HIS are pronouns
Replacing the noun Rufus Xavier Sasparilla,
A very proper noun,
And it is a pronoun replacing the noun kangaroo.
(How common.)
Now Rufus has a sister named Rafaella Gabriela Sasparilla
If she found a kangaroo I'd say to you
SHE found a kangaroo that followed HER home
and now it is HERS but I can't say that...
Because SHE found an aardvark
That fell in love with HER and THEY're so happy.
And my name is Albert Andreas Armadillo
(No relation to the Sasparillas)
Because of pronouns I can say:
I wish SHE would find a rhinoceros for ME
And WE'd be happy.
You see, a pronoun was made to take the place of a noun,
Because saying all those nouns over and over
Can really wear you down!
Now I could tell you Rafaella Gabriela
and Rufus Xavier Sasparilla and
Albert Andreas Armadillo found
an aardvark, a kangaroo and a rhinoceros
And now that aardvark and that kangaroo
and that rhinoceros belong respectively to
Rafaella Gabriela Sasparilla
and Rufus Xavier Sasparilla
and Albert Andreas Armadillo
Whew! Because of pronouns I can say in this way:
WE found THEM and THEY found US
And now THEY are OURs and WE're so happy
Thank you pronouns!
A pronoun was made to take the place of a noun
Because saying all those nouns over and over
Can really wear you down.
Sometimes when we take them all on the bus
People really raise a fuss
They start shouting out pronouns at us
Like, "WHO brought that rhinoceros on the bus?"
And "WHAT made that horrible noise?"
And "WHICH one of them's getting off first?"
WHO, WHAT, and WHICH are special pronouns
which can ask a question in the sense
where you do not know the name of the noun.
But I know
I have MINE and SHE has HERS and HE has HIS
YOU have YOURS
THEY love US and WE love THEM
What's OURS is THEIRS, that's how it is with
friends.
And pronouns, you are really friends, yeah!
Cause saying all those nouns over and over
can really wear you down.
