WIFI is the capacity to connect to the Internet without a wired connection. Most current lap-top computers, for example, now have the ability to pick up the signal.
For this to work you need, somewhere in the vicinity, a connection to an internet provider which is fitted with a 'wireless router'. This device is similar to a radio transmitter/receiver, in that it sends out the information from the Web to your computer, and then sends information from your computer to the Web.
One wireless router can serve many computers, as long as they are in range of its signal.

In a very broad sense the term can be loosely used in reference to wireless internet access technology in the home. You would hear the term alongside other terminology like 802.11a/b/g, wireless access point, Wireless LAN, etc.
In the most technical sense, it actually refers to a foundational set of standards for wireless communications that ensure inter-operability of equipment. For example, all equipment meeting WiFi standards will work with other equipment meeting WiFi standards. It is conceivable in theory to have wireless equipment not compliant with WiFi standards that still works...in which case you've got "wireless networking" but not WiFi. But again, this is a much more technical approach to the term than is probably typical.
