It all depends on what your target schools are. The best way to set your target score (or to see how "bad" your scores are) is to pick a few target schools, call the admissions office, and ask what the median SAT score was.
Generally, 1290 is pretty low and you need to retake the test. Contrary to the first answer, there are no "evil tricks" on the SAT; there are, however, problems designed to differentiate between people who can make quick decisions, pay attention to details, and stay calm under pressure, and people who cannot do those things. These are all skills you can learn, and if you do need higher scores, you need to invest some time into studying.
Whichever book/company you chose to study with, start by taking a free practice SAT at your local Kaplan center. The test results will spell out where your weaknesses are so you can study smarter and get more points.

While you're at it, don't forget to check out the ACT. Your schools will accept either test, and you may find the ACT a lot easier. You can take that free practice test at Kaplan, too.

That's pretty low... you should take it again. But no worries, you will do much better next time! There is an awesome study guide (called "Cracking The New SAT) by a company called The Princeton Review. It's a big fat red-and-white book. It rocks, I'm serious. It will help you overcome the "evil tricks" on the SAT that try to prevent regular folks from answering correctly. Good luck!
