I've heard the variation "No matter where you go, there you are." It means you can't leave yourself behind, even if you want to.

I've heard it--it's what's called an anticlimax. You're expecting them to say "everywhere you go...(and then some amazing realization that nobody ever thought of)"--but instead, they say "everywhere you go, there you are." An anticlimax is when what you say or do is a lot less profound than what is expected.

I guess it only means that where ever you go you end up leaving a part of you behind or taking something from there with you. Or it doesn't matter where you are, you are still you.

Seems to just mean that wherever you go you are there, so actually be there. Like mentally just be where you are don't let your mind wander off, that's what it means to me anyway.

People who seek escape often try to flee whatever situation in which they might be. However, it is often their own mind from which they seek escape. So, no matter where you run nor how fast you run, you cannot run away from yourself. Escape is impossible.
