Because we seem to have forgotten how to debate. Instead we stoop to petty name-calling, without analyzing and thinking about the argument.
These don't really convince me.

No, ad hominem arguments do not convince me at all. People who resort to ad hominem arguments do so for a number of reason. They could be so enraged by a subject they can't help, or have little else to say. Also, these type of arguments do not convince the opposing view to agree with you it just turns them off to your ideas. We are disecting arguements in our english class, and we spent about a week on ad hominem arguements.

Most of the time I am not convinced by an ad hominem. But, I think it is sometimes relevant to point out someone's hypocrisy, because that could lead to the realization of their true motives. If a politician, for example, is arguing for a particular policy, yet he voted against it, it is pretty effective to point that out. This along with a rebuttal is more effective than a rebuttal alone.

People are relatively stupid and are lead. Now I know places where they think they won an arguement by calling you names, those people are clearly stupid. They also ignore facts as if they were fiction.
If they are using ad honimium attacks they are using the weakest form of debate agianst your arguement and they are likely doing it Ad Infinitum. See they are trying to brain wash people and silence you for dissenting in your opinion.
Lots of people use the appeal to pity which is also a weak arguement but people try to demonize those who ignore the appeal to pity.

I consider myself to have won the argument when someone resorts to ad hominem attack.
It means it's all they've got.

Not me, but if I had an "us" vs. "them" mentality, anything that convinced me that someone else was not a member of my group, could make me disregard their argument.
